The Chemo Versus Sex Ratio

Margie Smith Holt Posted on April 4, 2014 Posted in Bylines, Power of the Pen

“So… how often do you get it?” asked a friend in an e-mail.

“More often than sex? You better not have to get chemo more often than sex.”

Visible Ink and Get Me RewriteI received that e-mail six years ago this week, while sitting in an infusion room, getting my second round of chemotherapy treatments for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The e-mail question became the catalyst for a story, one of many I wrote about my experience.

I’m healthy now and for the past two years have had the privilege of volunteering as a mentor with the Visible Ink writing program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This week Visible Ink presented its sixth annual staged reading of patient works–an always emotional, funny, and moving testament not only to the honesty and bravery of the writers, but also to the power of words to communicate, yes, but maybe also to heal.

Visible Ink was founded by author Judith Kelman, a wonderful writer and terrific mentor herself. Read more about Visible Ink HERE.
