An Apostrophe Catastrophe

Mother’s Day. Patriots’ Day. Veterans Day.

I’ve had to use all three in recent writings and spent more than a few minutes trying to figure out where–and whether–to use the apostrophe.

So I found this piece in The Wall Street Journal especially interesting.  Who knew that there is a government entity (the Domestic Names Committee of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names) trying to eradicate the apostrophe from maps?

Good thing there’s an organization called the Apostrophe Protection Society. Too bad they’re in the U.K.
